Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) poured in a career-high 18 points and had a pair of key baskets during a tie-breaking third-quarter run in the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team’s 65-53 Arrowhead Conference victory over Sauk Valley on Thursday at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

KEY MOMENT
After a seven-point Sauk Valley (9-14, 4-3) run tied the game at 40 in the third quarter, the Chargers (10-13, 3-2) answered with 10 straight points to go ahead for good. Freshman Sophie Whitford (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) opened the run with one of her five 3-pointers on the night. Droste followed with a steal-and-layup, and then added a trey — her third of the game — on the next possession for a 48-40 advantage.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Droste led all scorers with 18 points, surpassing her previous career high of 13. The sophomore guard finished 7 of 10 from the floor, including 3 of 4 from long range. Droste also had game highs of four assists and four steals.

Whitford also had a big night for Sandburg, scoring 17 points while going 5 of 9 from 3-point range. Whitford scored 14 of her points in the second half after the teams went into the locker room tied at 31.
